Abstract

The effects  of  bleaching  of sega rattan  (Calamus  caesius Bl) peel  by soaking  in the  hydrogen  peroxyde of  several  concentration  levels  (1 , 3,  5,  and  7 percent)  and  soaking  times  ( 1,  3,  and 5 hours)  on  rattan peel  quality   were studied  at  the  Forest  Products Research  and Development   Centre  Laboratory   in  Bogor.  Results  showed  that   the unblea- ched  rattan  peel  has the  brightness of  38.8  percent  and  the  tensile  strength  parallel to  grain  of  412.09  kg/cm2   while for the bleached  ones,  those  figures are 44. 74 percent  and 374.99  kg/cm2,   respectively.It  is found   that  bleaching  agent  concenlration   has a highly  significant  effect  on  both  brightness and tensile  strength parallel    to  grain.   The  brightness   (Y)   was significantly improved   with   the  increasing  of  bleaching  agent  concentrations (X)  which   can  be  expressed   by  the  regression  equation   of  Y  =  40.2365   + 1.1265  X  (r = 0.9992).   On the  other   hand, tensile strength   (Y)  was  significantly decreased  with  the  increasing  of hydrogen peroxyde  concentrations  (X,  as expressed by  the following rearession  equation:   Y  = 421.37 5 - 11.675 x  (r =  0.9888 ).The  apllcation  of 5 percent   hydrogen  peroxyde   concentration   is optimum  which  could improve the brightness  up to  46. 03 percent,   and  reduced  the  tensile  strength down  to 364.8  kg/cm2.

Abstract

Experimental   plywood (5 -  piy)  were made from  12 wood species  veneers  glued with  urea formaldehyde. Thichness of  veneer  was  1.5  mm  and  the  range  of  veneer  density   was  0.38  -   0.83 g/cm3.  Veneers  were divided  into  3 groups  based on  their  density,  i.e. low,   medium   and  high.  The  plywood properties   were  tested  according  to the  American Standard (ASTM)  and the  Japannese Standard  (JAS)  included  density.  tensile strength.  bending  strength, compression  strength,  and moisture  resistant  bonding  strength.The  results  revealed  that  plywood  density   was  higher  than  veneer  density   (same wood  species)  or average veneer density   (mixed  wood  species).   Tested  mechanical  properties of plywood  increased  if the plywood  density  increased and the relationship  could  be expressed  by  linier regression equations. The tensile strength, bending strength  and compression strength   of plywood  were  tested  both  on parallel and perpendicular to  face grain.  Correlation  coefficient  of  the relation-ship  between  plywood  density   and  those  plywood  mechanical  properties on parallel to face  grain (r = 0.66 -  0.84)  were higher  than  that  on perpendiculor  to face grain  (r = 0.51  -   0. 74). Similar results  were obtained  with F calculated  but all of  them  were  highly  significant.  Based on  those  results it could  be concluded   that some mechanical properties  of plywood could  be estimated   from  its  density, regardless   of  its wood  species.

Abstract

Penelition ini  bertuiuan   untuk   mengetahui  rasio  terbaik   humotex  terhadap tanah  atau gambut yang  dapat mem- berikan pertumbuhan  terbaik  dari tanaman jagung  {Zea mays L. ), Robinia  pseudoacacia  dan  Pinus  sylvestriS.Hasilpenelitian  menunjukkan,   bahwa  rasio  terbaik   humotex  terhadap  tanah  adalah 1 : 1. Penam bahan  humotex terhadap   tanah  meningkatkan   pH  tanah  dan  penyerapan hara  esensial  oleh  tanaman yang mengakibatkan  peningkatan berat  kering   tanaman jagung  sebesar  8 0 -  100%.Pencampuran   humotex  terhadap  gambut  pada rasio mak simum  dapat  meningkatkan pertu mbuhan jagung  15 kali, Robinia  pseudoacacia  15 kali  dan Pinus sylvestris  8 kali.

Abstract

This paper   describes  the  treatment  of  1.5  mm   x  20  cm x  20 cm rubberwood  veneer  with BFCA compound of   5 %,  10%.   15 %, 20 %  and  control,  and  3  variations of  extender  in urea  formaldehyde   glue  ,    compositionic    10%, 20% and 30%.The  results  reveal   that  the   concentration of  BFCA  influences    the  bonding   strength  of  rubberwood plywood using Indonesian standard. On the  other  hand  the  effect of percentage   of  extender in  tne compostion  of  urea  formal dehyde   glue  is  not  significant on the bonding strength using Indonesian and Japanese standard. But  the interaction. of concentration of BFCA and percentage  of  extender influences  the bonding strength of plywood.

Abstract

Dranco  (Dry Anaerobic Conversion) process  is anaerobic  fermentation to produce biogas and paste  residue.  Through pressing,   the  residue  will yield  solid compost (humotex) and liquid compost  (Dranco  liquid). The aim of  this inveatigation is  to know   the  effect   of  the  utilization  of dranco   liquid  when applying it as compost  either  the  effect   on  soil or plant.The  results  showed  that  Dranco  liquid  contained very  low P.  Ca, Mg,  Fe, Mn.  Zn  and  heavy  metals Kj-N,  K and Na   were also  low  but  high enough   when  comparing  with  other nutrients in Dranco  liquid.  The NH4+ was ranked  as high.Addition  of  Dronco  liquid  brought about  an increase  of  E.C  3 - 6 times  depends on  soil  types  ,and liquid  concen- trotion, while soil pH  increased  1.5 -  2 level. The highest growth of maize  was achieved when  soil was mixed with  Dranco  liquid  that  was diluted  2 -  10  times.  Besides,  addition of  Draneo  liquid can maintain  the life of  maize plant  under  water lacking  condition.  Addition  of  Drenco   liquid  increased soil  agregate  stability   2 - 2 0 times  depends  on  soil  types and Dranco   liquid  concentration.  Nitrification process  was  able  to  convert   NH4+  in  the  Dranco liquid   to  N03-  with an  efficicncy  capacity  of  35 %. As a conclusion,  Dranco  liquid is useful to be used as compost liquid  for increasing  soil fertility  as well as promoting plant  growth.

Abstract

The  result  of  a  study  on  the  effect  of soil moisture  content and  temperature  on subterranean  termite  distribution is presented   in this paper.The study  shows   that   soil  moisture   content   and   temperature  has significant   effect   on  subterranean  termite distribution. Four  subterronean   termites   namely  Microtermes  incertoides,  M.  insperatus,  Macrotermes  gilvus and Coptotermes  curvignathus  were  identified   at  the  first  location   (soil  moisture  content  = 21. 71 %,  soil  temperature   = 25. 7oc).   Whereas  at  the  second   location   (soil  moisture content =  8.36%,   soil  temperature  =  27.5°C)   two  species  only were  identified   namely  M. incertoides and  M.  insperatus.
